5 Simple ways to achieve your Fitness Goals in 2019

FITREP trainers Shaun Warner and Celia Lopez share their no-nonsense tips to staying motived throughout the year
New Year’s resolutions are usually started with the best of intentions. Determination is fresh and strong within those first few weeks of January and then begins to fizzle come Valentines Day (especially on February 15th with 50% off chocolate and candy).

But fear not! Personal Trainers Shaun Warner and Celia Lopez from FITREP- a new app that connects you with local trainers for sessions at home or at a gym, have some motivational tips to show us that yes; our fitness resolutions can be achieved.

#1: Be realistic
The main reason that resolutions are hard to keep is that they are typically unrealistic. Hitting the gym five days per week after not exercising for a year will have you burn out and become discouraged. Instead, try to develop realistic goals and ease into them. And take them one step at a time so you can feel accomplished and motivated to continue. “With FITREP, you can start small with something like a stretch yoga class, perfect for beginners. Then later progression can be made to some HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) or strength training, depending on your training style, and your trainer’s specialities,” says Celia Lopez from FITREP

#2: Create a plan
Goals seem that much more attainable and realistic when they are put down on paper, or screen! That shiny new 2019 agenda you just got yourself is the perfect sidekick to staying motivated. If you happen to not be the pen/paper type of person, then your phone calendar is also a great option. FITREP will help you book your workouts and stay committed to them. Through the app, you can choose a specific type of workout, plus a date, time and trainer, and you will automatically be sent a confirmation and reminder. Add this to your daily calendar, and you’ll be golden.

#3: Reframe your goals
Keep a positive approach. Losing weight, for example, is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions, but can also sound like a difficult, daunting task for those who struggle. Simply reframing the goal to something more positive, such as; ‘I want to invest more time in my health’ or ‘I want to try a fun new fitness activity each month’, can make a subconscious difference to have you looking forward to achieving your resolution. “Reaching fitness goals is as much of a mental game as a physical one,” shares Shaun Warner from FITREP. “Communicate your goals to your trainer as they can be an excellent resource to continue to fuel you with motivational messaging that can keep you progressing in between workouts.”

#4: Have a support group/individual that motivates you
Joining a group of like-minded individuals can truly work wonders when it comes to motivation. It introduces accountability, instils feelings of encouragement and can be a lot of fun! “FITREP offers individual and small group sessions. As trainers, we love it when people take an active interest in their health and want to make it a social and community experience. It’s a great way to stay connected with friends while also bettering your health,” says Warner.

#5: Stay local!
Especially in the winter months, travelling any distance can become a huge barrier. If you have a gym in your building, a FITREP trainer can come and workout with you right there, and as the weather improves, you can do sessions outdoors in local parks too. “Gyms are not for everyone. There are some amazing programs trainers can put together to be executed right in your living room with little to no equipment,” says Lopez. “Explore what option works best for you. Keep it simple, and you’ll be well on your way to making 2019 your best year yet.”
