Free outdoor movies kick off this weekend at CityPlace’s Canoe Landing Park

By  |

Gone are the days when urbanites piled into their cars to go to the local drive-in. Now city folk grab a lawn chair, blanket, or their yoga mat and go to the local park and watch a movie under the stars — or let’s be real, the glow from the city night lights.

The recently formed CityPlace Fort York Business Improvement Association (CPFYBIA) will begin showing monthly outdoor movies in Canoe Landing Park, starting this Saturday, June 17.

The community movie night will happen until September for CityPlace residents and their neighbours. The best news is that the movies are fun, family-friendly and free!

The 2017 show line-up is:

Saturday, June 17th – The Sandlot
Saturday, July 15th – Half Baked
Saturday, August 12th – Ace Ventura Pet Detective

The September film will be a CityPlace pick. The CPFYBIA will survey the community via local Facebook groups to choose the final movie, which will happen Saturday, September 16.

“There is nothing like watching a great movie with great friends under the stars!”, Jesse Topliffe, chair of the CPFYBIA said.

The film will be on at 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. And if you’re peckish and thirsty, there will be refreshments and snacks, 7-8 p.m. If you want more than a snack, CityPlace has many restaurants and take-outs you can visit before the show for a bite or bring to the park.

“The CPFYBIA is proud to contribute to the vibrancy of our community. It’s the little things that make the biggest difference,” Topliffe said.

The event is already getting huge attention. According to the Movie Night Facebook page, 86 people have already confirmed they are going, and 293 are interested.

Since these movies are outdoor events, people are encouraged to check the Facebook page to ensure a movie is still scheduled in case of inclement weather.
