Removing barriers for emerging local artists

The Westside Art Gallery is a unique shipping container art gallery – the first of its kind in Toronto. It’s located at the Westside Market at Front Street West and Bathurst Street, south of the Thomson Hotel in trendy King West. The Minto Group, who is developing the site for condos, Minto Westside and Scadding Court Community Centre have partnered to create the gallery as a platform for local and emerging artists to have an opportunity to promote, display and sell their art while much of the condo lot remains vacant before construction begins.

New up and coming artist, Hale Ferrer, was the first to showcase his paintings from his series My Kaleidoscope World, a colour journey. The gallery operates at a no cost for new artists in order to remove any barriers that many emerging and local artists face. Mr. Ferrer’s art series can be viewed online, www.fb.com/mykaleidoscopeworld.

Kevin Lee, Executive Director at Scadding Community Centre (www.scaddingcourt.org), was eager to create a specialized platform for artists. “Emerging artists in Toronto have limited access to the space they need to showcase their work. It’s important for our Centre to support local artists. Through our existing urban markets that repurpose the use of shipping containers acting as retail space and with the support of Minto Group we were able to make this a reality.”

Diane Wallace, Director of Marketing, Minto Communities (www.minto.com) says, “At the Westside Market, we were keen to incorporate an essence of the city’s artistic side within the neighbourhood”.

The Westside Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 11:00am. to 8:00pm. until mid-October 2015.
